Whilst the driver is a vital part of success in F1, you also need the right car behind you. Involved in that is the most crucial component of all - the engine. Here is a look at the five most successful engine manufacturers in history.

Drivers may be the talking point of F1 but it is widely recognised that a huge part of any success story is the car.

No one doubts that Max Verstappen or Lewis Hamilton, for example, were instrumental in their own triumphs in the past decade, yet having the right machinery is vital in order to gain trophies.

Engines are, of course, a key part of a car's performance and here we take a look at the five most successful suppliers in F1 history.

Honda

Honda may have jumped in and out of F1 on multiple occasions but it remains one of the most successful engine manufacturers in the sports' history.

The Japanese manufacturer has been an integral part of some of the greatest cars the grid has welcomed, whether it be the Williams of 1986 and 1987, or the McLarens of 1988 through to 1991.

Those years took in the official Constructors' Championships Honda has been a part of, though Red Bull's recent success has had a hand from the manufacturer.

In all, Honda has officially been a part of 89 race victories and 223 podiums, including that stellar run McLaren experienced in 1988 where the team won all but one race in the season.

Again, unofficially, these stats are inflated due to Red Bull's recent successes but whilst the stats won't be added to for now, Honda returns to the grid in an official capacity with Aston Martin from 2026.

Mercedes

Mercedes was the manufacturer that hit the current power unit regulations running, dominating the Constructors' Championship between 2014 and 2021.

But the German marque found plenty of success as a supplier long before it returned to the grid in the form of a works outfit in 2010.

The partnership with McLaren gave it its first title in 1998, with the total now standing at 10 - having also added to the tally with Brawn GP in 2009.

Mercedes has picked up 212 wins as an engine supplier, with 582 podiums also recorded.

Ford Cosworth

There was a time in F1 when the engine to have was a Ford Cosworth DFV.

Quite simply, the engine was a masterpiece and was the reason many teams found success in the late 1960s all the way up to the early 1980s.

A first title in 1968 with Lotus was followed by another six consecutively, with the tally taken up to 10 by triumphs in 1978, 1980 and 1981.

The Ford Cosworth was responsible for 176 victories during its time on the grid, whilst the 533 podiums amassed prove just how popular the engine was during that period.

Renault

The Renault works team may have come in and out of F1 as frequently as Honda's entire operation, but the French manufacturer has had a strong bond with the sport since entering.

There has been plenty of success too, with 169 wins and 463 podiums amassed by Renault engines.

But three golden periods have allowed the marque to notch up 12 Constructors' titles in F1, beginning with a six-year stretch between 1992 and 1997.

Fernando Alonso's triumphs in 2005 and 2006 saw Renault become Constructors' champion, while Red Bull's four-year domination between 2010 and 2013 added to the roll of honour.

The stats have been padded more recently by podiums for Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly for Alpine, though wins and titles seem a distant dream for now.

Ferrari

It will be of no surprise that Ferrari tops the list with a stunning success rate as F1's ever-present manufacturer.

The Italian outfit is the most successful manufacturer in the sport, with Ferrari engines finding plenty of success over the years.

In total, 813 podiums have been scored with a Ferrari engine powering the car whilst 244 wins have been recorded.

A huge 16 titles are noted in the record books, beginning in 1961 and ending with the last triumph all the way back in 2008.

When will the next title come for the Scuderia?
